Olympic Village:
Public Participation

Location: Hunters Point, Long Island City, NY
Client: Hunters Point Community Coalition

NYC2012, which had hoped to bring the Olympics to New York City in 2012, proposed the construction of an Olympic Village in Hunters Point, directly across the East River from the United Nations. The Village was intended to house 16,000 athletes and coaches during the events. Afterwards its structures would become housing for up to 18,000 New Yorkers.

The Hunters Point Community Coalition, a long-time client, turned to Nautilus for assistance in responding to the proposal. Nautilus helped facilitate community discussion and consensus; educated Coalition members about the long-term urban issues such as public waterfront access, mixed-uses, traffic and pedestrian circulation; and assisted in historic research.

The resulting position paper effectively articulated the community's position and a majority of its points were incorporated into NYC2012's program for the Village's design competition.
